From London to Sudeley Castle in the Cotswolds – Crafting a Wedding Steeped in Modern Elegance, Travel Memories & Personal Storytelling
Some weddings are about more than just the day itself – they’re about distilling a couple’s shared life, passions, and personal history into one seamless celebration. From our very first conversation, I knew that Josh and Charlotte wanted something different: a wedding that would reflect their life in London, their love of architecture and travel, and the kind of design-led aesthetic that’s as much about feeling as it is about visuals.
Their story began with a friendship – Josh’s best friend from school is also a good friend of Charlotte’s from university. To this day, he’s still bemused that they ended up together (which featured in his best man speech!). After 12 years in London, they wanted to capture the intimacy and sophistication of their dream London wedding – think Marylebone Town Hall followed by lunch at the River Café – but translate it to the Cotswolds, somewhere family would feel more at ease.
Bringing Their World to the Countryside
As a wedding planner, one of the most rewarding aspects is finding a venue that feels perfect - a place that aligns with a couple’s aesthetic, practical needs, and emotional story. For Charlotte and Josh, Sudeley Castle ticked every box.
When we began the venue search, proximity was a key factor. Sudeley offered the perfect balance—just minutes from Josh’s family, under three hours for Charlotte’s in Manchester, and a straight-forward journey for friends travelling from London. It meant no one had to compromise, and yet everyone could enjoy the sense of escape that comes with a weekend in the Cotswolds. Sudeley Castle isn’t just beautiful - it’s exquisitely cared for. The dedication to its restoration and preservation is apparent in every detail. Much like Kew Gardens in London, it offers breathtaking views at every turn, but with the added advantage of a countryside setting.
The ability to host events across two days allowed Charlotte and Josh to create a flowing, unhurried experience for their guests. And crucially, Sudeley’s flexibility with suppliers meant we could bring in a handpicked creative team that reflected the couple’s personality and style, achievable with a wedding planner to guide the process and ensure every detail was seamlessly executed.
Design Runs Deep
They renovated their first home in a mid-century style, and as we planned the wedding, they were preparing to sell it with The Modern House. Their travels are a blend of nature and architecture – from Kalach’s brutalist Hotel Terrestre in Mexico to Tadao Ando’s Casa Wabi – and their home is filled with film photography documenting these adventures. For me, in the planning of their wedding celebrations, it was essential that a modern, understated aesthetic carried into each element of the wedding design: clean lines, natural tones, and a touch of hand-drawn quirkiness, inspired by their favourite restaurants, River Café and Mountain. We steered well clear of “Cotswold cute” and the oversaturated pastels so often seen in countryside weddings – instead opting for abundant foliage, candid over posed, and a palette that felt fresh and considered.
Music as the Thread That Ties It Together
Through the consultation period, it was evident that music is central to their relationship. Late-night jazz at Ronnie Scott’s, the first “I love you” at a Kendrick Lamar concert, and nights dancing to disco-house at Printworks. We curated the day so it flows like their love story – from their early days together to the high-energy finale. Jazz played in the Rose Garden during their drinks reception and they danced the night away to some of their favourite tracks (they admitted to having a very eclectic taste)!
Details That Meant Something
Every element was intentional. For drinks, we served champagne and wine from their recent trip to Burgundy and Reims – a nod to a favourite adventure. These thoughtful touches are what make a wedding feel truly personal and my ethos as a wedding planner is that the celebrations should really feel like you!
Setting the Scene – Rain or Shine
With Sudeley Castle as our setting, we had choice in terms of location for the drinks reception and in the design, we ensured the atmosphere would suit each respective space. The venue’s gardens were our chosen setting if the sun shone, allowing the landscape to frame the day naturally. But if the weather were to turn, transforming the Coach House into a haven of candlelight, low-level lighting, with warm jazz playing would create a cosy, intimate feel. Fortunately, Charlotte and Josh got to enjoy their drinks reception in the beautiful Rose Garden – where their champagne tower awaited them, the bruschetta station drew a crowd and the jazz band played whilst the sun shone.
Capturing the Magic: Favourite Moments
There are moments on a wedding day that even the most meticulous planning can’t create, they simply unfold. Charlotte and Josh’s favourite moment from the day was a quiet pause just after the ceremony, which Charlotte recalls, “The few minutes after the ceremony, waiting around the chapel corner just the two of us. Happy, married, and hearing the strings play 'Here Comes The Sun' and the sound of all our friends and family laughing and talking as they lined up for confetti”
A Culinary Highlight
As planners, we always encourage our couples to take a few minutes to actually eat! For Charlotte and Josh, their first bite, an exquisitely cooked scallop during the drinks reception, was a standout moment. Just one bite, perfectly prepared, but full of meaning. It was a reminder of the thought that had gone into every element of the day.
The Dress Moment
Finding the dress is such a personal journey, and Charlotte’s choice was the perfect reflection of her. “I loved the silk fabric - it felt like I was wearing the dress rather than it wearing me, which isn’t always easy when you’re 5ft tall!” she told us. She’d considered a Vivienne Westwood design but found something with a similar timeless elegance and structure, at a more approachable price point, without compromising on style.
My role as their wedding planner…
For me, this wedding was about creating a space where their world – modern, design-led, and deeply personal – met the relaxed charm of the Cotswolds. It was a love letter to where they’ve travelled to, the music they’ve danced to, and the life they’ve built together.
